The Shadow of Love: the first breath of Forty Years of Silence

A song born from the pages my mother left behind — and from the responsibility to carry her story without reducing her life to what she endured.

A song born from the pages my mother left behind — and from the responsibility to carry her story without reducing her life to what she endured.

Some stories reach us in fragments

Some stories arrive whole. Others reach us through gestures, ordinary objects and words written when speaking aloud was still too difficult.

After my mother Jeannine died, I returned to the pages she had left behind. They carried moments of tenderness, fear, doubt and resistance. In reading them, I understood more fully the domestic abuse and coercive control she had endured, and the strength with which she had continued to live. Those pages asked to be heard with care. Her life could not be reduced to violence; it also held childhood, hope, love, contradictions, work and joy.

When words become a song

The Shadow of Love was my first response to that responsibility. It is neither a summary of my mother’s life nor a verdict on the past. It leaves fear, attachment, fragility and the possibility of finding light together in the same space.

A novel can hold duration, context and contradiction. A song reaches another place. In a few minutes, music can carry what explanation sometimes flattens: hesitation, breath, longing and the first movement back towards oneself.

The Shadow of Love is not a summary of Forty Years of Silence. It is its first breath.

Your Breath Is Your Greatest Treasure

The subtitle became a compass: Your Breath Is Your Greatest Treasure.

Breath is not a decorative symbol here. It is an intimate measure of freedom. When fear governs a life, even breathing can seem to depend on someone else’s mood or permission. Recovering one’s breath does not erase what happened; it restores an inner space from which choice may become possible again.

The song seeks neither a triumphant ending nor an easy transformation. Rebuilding rarely follows a straight line. Sometimes change begins by hearing one’s own breath again — and recognising that it belongs to no one else.

A voice that serves the story

I have never wanted to stand at the centre as a performer. My role begins with the story, then continues through those who give it another form.

The voice belongs to an artist who has chosen to remain anonymous. That choice is respected. Her interpretation brings fragility and human presence without turning the work into her portrait.

Killian Cruiser produced, mixed and mastered the track. The collaboration allowed the words to become a restrained, cinematic musical space in which listeners can bring their own memories.

The musical prelude to Forty Years of Silence

The Shadow of Love stands at the threshold of Forty Years of Silence, the public English name of Le silence avait quarante ans. The wider project brings together a novel and a narrative album inspired by Jeannine’s testimony and the traces she left behind.

The novel will hold time, place and complexity. The album will let different voices, languages and musical sensibilities carry the journey. The song is the first opening into that world: not the whole story, but the moment when silence takes another form.

Rooted in Reunion Island and one family’s memory, the project does not speak for every survivor. It seeks to remain faithful to one life while allowing its questions to resonate beyond the family circle.

An invitation to listen

The Shadow of Love was officially released on 27 June 2026. It can be heard as a song in its own right, or as the first musical doorway into Forty Years of Silence.

Listening does not require knowing every detail. It begins with a voice, a few words and the space each person brings to them. The Journal will continue to share what lies beyond the song: the writing, music, images and collaborations that allow a private memory to become a work of transmission.
